Reds offseason

After yet another disappointing season for my Cincinnati Reds, where they finished below .500 for the 8th straight season, this off-season is CRUCIAL when talking about the future of the ballclub.

The only players you can set in stone for the upcoming season are Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto, and Aaron Harang.  That is a pretty solid foundation to build around.  With Alex Gonzalez and Edwin Encarnacion holding down the left side of the infield……well, I guess I have seen worse.  The outfield is also suspect with no proven player at the corner spots.

After trading away Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. last season, the Reds really need to look into obtaining a big right handed bat.  A name that has been thrown around so far this winter, is Jermaine Dye.  As those talks are seeming to fade away, names such as Rocco Baldelli, and big bats Pat Burrell and Bobby Abreu are coming into play.  To be honest with you, I really hope we don’t get Rocco Baldelli; poor guy will get tired walking off the plane.  I love Bobby Abreu and would be ecstatic if we got him.  You can chalk him up for .300, 100+ RBI, and around 15 steals or so.  What is there not to like about that?!

We just shipped away Ryan Freel, PRAISE GOD, for a pretty solid catcher in Ramon Hernandez.  His defense might be suspect, but who cares, he can rake compared to Paul Bako, Dave Ross, and Javier Valentin.  Now all we gotta do is trade Homer Bailey and hope someone overvalues him.

With this possible lineup, look for the Reds to make some noise similar to the Brewers a couple of years ago.  I don’t think we will compete for the pennant, but we will definitely put a lot of pressure on the Cubs in the central this season.  We could possibly have 7 guys hitting 20+ bombs.  That is pretty impressive.

Harang, Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto, Owings

Stubbs/Dickerson (lf), Phillips (2b), Abreu/Dye/FA (rf), Votto (1b), Bruce (cf), Hernandez (c), Edwin (3b), Gonzalez/Keppinger (ss), Pitcher

Let’s pray that Walt Jocketty can turn this ship around.  I want to take my boy to a game here in about 5 or 6 years with his new Votto jersey on, sitting out in right centerfield watching Jay Bruce track down balls trying to lead the squad to back-to-back World Series championships.
